Orlando, Fla. –
GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) – a national engineering and environmental
consulting firm – announced it has acquired Real Estate Research
Consultants, Inc. (RERC) of Orlando, FL to broaden GAI’s services to its
existing clients. RERC provides real
estate and economic advisory services to public, institutional and
private clients throughout the United States who have complex community
development issues or substantial real estate property holdings.
Gary DeJidas, P.E., GAI President and CEO, explained
the decision to acquire RERC was a logical extension of the firm’s
continued professional association with RERC. “GAI has long partnered
with RERC and realized the fastest and most effective way to enhance our
shared interests in community development, public finance, and
public/private initiatives was to formalize and strengthen our
relationship.”
DeJidas further clarified, “RERC will continue to
operate under its own name and identity as a GAI Company, reflecting our
company’s respect for RERC’s goodwill and leadership role in the
community.”
Principals of RERC Owen Beitsch, Tom Kohler and David
Darsey will retain their roles in the wholly-owned subsidiary where
they have been active partners for almost 20 years. The three will also
become stockholders in GAI and continue as officers in RERC as part of
the arrangement between the two companies.
Mr. Beitsch, the major shareholder of RERC, noted the
seamless transition of resources, contacts, and new markets between
companies, “We are particularly pleased to gain access to GAI’s network
in the nation’s Midwestern states. Prior to the actual acquisition, our
two firms had already explored working together in this region.” DeJidas
added, “GAI respects the differences and services between the two
firms, but I anticipate both companies will leverage their valuable
client relationships. We expect that RERC will continue to grow and
prosper as a company in this new association.”
GAI and RERC were introduced in Orlando, FL in the
early 1990s when they began working on Orlando’s downtown circulator
system now known as LYMMO. They are currently working together on
projects at Orlando Health and Health Central, among others. Pittsburgh, Pa.

Jacksonville, Fla. – Winners of the America’s Transportation Awards (ATA) competition were announced, honoring the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – District 2 as the Grand Prize winner for its I-10/I-95 Interchange reconstruction project.
A panel of transportation experts voted for its favorite project in the country and selected FDOT’s interchange rebuild, known as “The Big I,” as America’s Best Transportation Project. The award and $10,000 cash prize were presented during the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Annual Meeting. The money will be used to support a charity or academic scholarship program.
AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce sponsored the 4th Annual ATA competition, which recognizes outstanding transportation projects in three categories: On Time, Under Budget, and Innovative Management. In August, the Big I was honored as the ATA winner in the On Time, Medium Project category. FDOT then joined nine other national finalists to compete for the Grand Prize and People's Choice Award.
FDOT worked with prime consultant GAI Consultants (CEI), Archer Western Contractors (contractor), and URS Corporation (engineer of record) to complete the $157 million reconstruction project.
“GAI is proud to be part of this collaboration with FDOT and Archer Western,” offers Greg Nettuno, P.E., Vice President and GAI-Jacksonville Managing Officer. “When a project team works together to solve major challenges associated with constructing complex transportation projects, the results will have a direct benefit to the taxpayer and the traveling public.”
The Big I required 17 bridges, 21 ramps, and 25 lane miles to be built through one of the busiest interchanges in Florida. Construction commenced in February 2005, and was completed six months ahead of schedule in October 2010. The project transformed Jacksonville's downtown transportation system, providing congestion relief and additional road capacity for approximately 172,000 vehicles daily.

Washington State & Florida Honored for America's Best Transportation Projects: $10,000 Prizes Awarded for Congestion Management & Interstate Interchange
DETROIT – The people have spoken, casting more than 100,000 votes in the fourth annual America's Transportation Awards competition. Holding tight onto an early lead, the Washington State Department of Transportation claimed the People's Choice Award for its Operation I-5 Partnership Project.
A panel of transportation experts also weighed in on its favorite project in America, selecting the Florida Department of Transportation as the Grand Prize winner for its Interstate 10/Interstate 95 interchange rebuild known as "The Big I" project.
Both awards were announced Sunday during the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Annual Meeting. AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce sponsor the America's Transportation Awards competition, which recognizes outstanding transportation projects in three categories: On Time, Under Budget, and Innovative Management. The 10 projects that scored the highest during four regional contests competed for both the Grand Prize and the People's Choice Award.
"These projects best demonstrate the wonderful work that state transportation departments are doing all across the country," said AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley. "In this time of fiscal constraint, it's important that we recognize some of the numerous projects that finish ahead of schedule, under budget, and use innovative strategies, translating into savings for taxpayers and a better transportation system for moving people and goods."
AASHTO presented $10,000 cash prizes to both of the winning transportation departments. The money will be used to support the charity or academic scholarship program of their choice.
WSDOT worked with a coalition consisting of federal, state, military, and local leaders to creatively solve the traffic problem that stretched for miles along I-5 through the Lewis-McChord military base nestled between Tacoma and Olympia, an area seeing robust growth in economy and population. Interchanges at military gates were improved with better alignment and better-timed traffic signals, gates that had never opened were unlocked so military personnel could access the base more easily, and tools such as Incident Response were quickly deployed to combat congestion, saving commuters plenty of time on the road.
FDOT's reconstruction of the I-10/I-95 interchange consisted of 17 bridges, 21 ramps, and 25 lane miles built over and around traffic moving through one of the busiest interchanges in the state. The interchange – where two of the country's longest and most heavily traveled interstates intersect – was originally built in the 1950s and desperately needed an upgrade. The project finished six months ahead of schedule, saving taxpayer dollars and countless commuting headaches.
A total of 40 projects from 29 states were entered in this year's America's Transportation Awards competition. More information about all the projects is available at www.americastransportationaward.org, and a video showcasing the 10 national finalists is available at http://aash.to/videotop10.

Orlando, Fla. – GAI Consultants Inc., a multidiscipline engineering and environmental firm, announces the opening of its new office in Downtown Orlando, Fla. An Open House event on Thursday, June 9, at the GAI Building formally marked the opening of GAI’s Southeast Region Headquarters.
GAI staff was joined by valued clients and guests at the event, which included building tours and speeches from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Patty Sheehan, Developer Craig Ustler, and GAI President and CEO Gary DeJidas.
“GAI's new home is the first privately developed green office building in Downtown Orlando and the only downtown office building built in 2010. Its completion represents the beginning of a new wave of downtown investment,” noted Mayor Buddy Dyer.
Formerly an infill site, the new $30 million development is a boost for the local economy, boasting 105,000 square feet of professional office space and a 300-space integrated parking garage. The sustainable facility has been designed for LEED® certification, with eco-friendly features including floors made from corn and Energy Star qualified technology devices. GAI Consultants signed a long-term lease to occupy 65,000 square feet of the seven-story GAI Building.
“With nearly 30 years of service to Downtown Orlando, GAI is proud to have its name on this significant development,” stated President and CEO Gary DeJidas, P.E.
Founded in Pittsburgh, Pa., GAI established its first branch office in Orlando in 1982, when Mr. DeJidas expanded operations into the Southeast. GAI’s Orlando office, which is now the second largest of the firm’s 21 locations, needed a more modern, sustainable space. Ustler Development, Inc. delivered the solution – a downtown structure designed for a smaller environmental footprint than typical urban buildings.
In addition to being the anchor tenant, GAI served as the project’s civil engineer. Ustler Development led the project team, which included Baker Barrios Architects and general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie, the top LEED builder in the Southeast. Construction began in late 2009 and ended in March 2011. Ustler Development is currently pursuing LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Orlando, Fla. – The GAI Building opens for business, welcoming anchor tenant GAI Consultants to downtown Orlando’s first privately-developed green office.
“With nearly 30 years of service to downtown Orlando, GAI is proud to have its name on this significant development,” noted President and CEO Gary DeJidas, P.E.
“It’s incredible that because of our valued clients, talented staff, and great leadership, we’re able to grow GAI in these difficult economic conditions,” expressed Orlando Managing Officer and Vice President Richard Cima, P.E.
In addition to being the anchor tenant, GAI served as the project’s civil engineer. Ustler Development led the project team, which included Baker Barrios Architects and general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie, the top LEED® builder in the Southeast. Construction began in late 2009 and ended in March 2011. Ustler Development is currently pursuing LEED® silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

2010 Press Releases
Jacksonville, Fla. – GAI Consultants, Inc. joined contractor Archer Western, design engineer URS Corp., and FDOT officials in completing the I-10/I-95 Interchange Reconstruction, which rebuilt a complex major interchange over one of Northeast Florida's most heavily trafficked areas.
Officials joined the team at a Sept. 17 ribbon-cutting of the six-year project, known as "The Big I." The $154 million project is one of the largest single contracts ever awarded with the Florida Department of Transportation's District 2.
GAI provided CEI services on the project, which added four flyover ramps and 17 bridge structures to the existing interchange. The new configuration will improve traffic flow and eliminate points of conflict, or weaving.
"The strong partnership between Archer Western, GAI, URS, and FDOT was key to ensuring the smooth outcome of this major infrastructure improvement," said Senior Project Engineer and GAI Vice President/Managing Officer Greg Nettuno, P.E.
In the past, local and through traffic have shared the same lanes and caused significant backups. Drivers will now use separate lanes for through and local traffic, with specific lanes for people moving on and off the interstate. Approximately 172,000 vehicles in both directions travel through the project limits on I-95 over the Fuller Warren Bridge.
Officials expect final completion of lighting, landscape, and drainage work to occur in early 2011. GAI also developed the project website - www.The BigI.info - which will continue to serve as a primary tool for public information.
