GAI's Surveyors Modernize an Ancient Profession

Surveying is a technique, an art, a science and a profession, but no matter how one may define it, GAI has the team, know-how and equipment to accurately meet the surveying needs of our clients.

The Foundation is Still There… with Good Company

We’ve come a long way from the surveyors who helped build the Pyramids, the Roman aqueducts and who mapped the New World’s seemingly endless miles of coastline, but the basic foundations of the trade are still there… amongst other things. Surveying combines elements of geometry, standard mathematics, trigonometry, engineering, physics and even law to produce measurements that determine the position of points and physical details on, above and beneath the very land on which we live, translating the information collected using the aforementioned techniques into a practical and legible form. The basic elements of surveying, which are used to this very day, have been used for thousands of years to establish the boundaries of empires, kingdoms and states, and to build some of antiquity’s most recognizable structures.

There’s no doubt that the profession has great claim to a rich and distinguished history, but if you’d rather put a face to the name, today’s surveyors, when asked, are always able to reference a few notable practitioners of the trade. From U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln to American philosopher and naturalist Henry David Thoreau and expedition leaders Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Samuel de Champlain and Captain George Vancouver, surveyors today practice in very good company and with similar technique, though the tools of the trade have definitely changed. Where the Romans used a knotted rope and a pendulum, George Washington used chains and a level and today we use lasers and GPS, surveying is now a technologically driven field, and we’re keeping ourselves on the cusp of change so that we can offer the highest quality solutions to our clients, providing time- and cost-effective service, accuracy of measurements and peace-of-mind.
