Description: GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) is an engineering and environmental consulting firm with offices in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, and Florida. The firm has an immediate opening for a Field Director (FD) working out of its Pittsburgh (PA) office. This is a mid level position that requires a B.A. or M.A. in anthropology/archaeology with no less than 3 to 4 years supervisory experience.
Candidates must have experience directing Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III studies in the Mid Atlantic region on both prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and must be able to meet tight project schedules. While these individuals will often work under the direction of a Principal Investigator, it is anticipated that Field Directors will operate independently in many cases.
Candidates must be able demonstrate their communication, organizational, logistical, and technical skills for this position as it requires significant interaction with field crew, office and laboratory staff, and client representatives. A clear understanding of Section 106 (NHPA), soils, and strong mapping skills is an absolute must. This position involves significant field time so candidates should not have any travel restrictions. Artifact analytical skills will be considered a plus. The Field Director's primary responsibilities will be the supervision of field crews involving the direction of the crew chief and coordination with the Principal Investigator (PI) and Laboratory Director.
In close cooperation with the PI, they may also coordinate the work of draftspersons and support personnel necessary for the production of draft and final reports and contribute to the preparation of proposals (i.e., field estimates). At times, a Field Director may be requested to write small sections of reports commensurate with that person's involvement with the project.

Candidates serve as Crew Chiefs under the general direction of field and lab directors/project managers and will be responsible for primarily fieldwork although laboratory work may be involved to a lesser degree. Position requires knowledge and experience of all aspects of Phase I - III fieldwork. Applicant assists in identifying and recording historic and prehistoric archaeological sites, conducting hand excavations, generating plan and profile maps of excavated units and features, completing standard level and feature forms, and screening soils to recover artifacts. This position requires strenuous physical activities, such as walking, climbing, and lifting, often in rough terrain in isolated areas, and in a variety of weather conditions. Applicant is responsible for maintaining a field inventory of artifacts, field equipment, and supplies. Candidates provide leadership to field crews by assigning tasks, monitoring the status of tasks, checking work in progress and amending or rejecting work not meeting established standards. Crew Chiefs report performance and progress of technicians to supervisors and insure that archeological work assignments are carried out in a safe and timely manner according to established standards and procedures. Position may require site form compilation and research of reference material, such as state archeological site survey forms, National Register files and historic documents/maps, and report writing. Laboratory duties include washing, identifying, classifying, labeling and cataloging of artifacts, and processing flotation samples. Individuals must be detail oriented, highly organized, and able to prioritize assignments and willing to work flexible hours as deadlines and workload requires. Knowledge of prehistoric and historic artifact analysis is a plus.
