Home Transportation ... 50 Years Ago
Transportation sure was different 50 years ago Print E-mail

In 1958, we drove bigger cars. A gallon of gas cost 30 cents. Roads were narrower and rougher. It took a lot longer to go from here to there.

But the world changed...

and grew quickly. Laws were enacted to keep order on the highways and byways:

  • 1963 Act 168 implemented to promote safety upon the public highways.
  • 1966 US Department of Transportation established; National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) becomes law.
  • 1969 Congress enacts Natural Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  • 1986 Pennsylvania amends Act 168 to include the beneficial use of coal ash.
  • 1987 Federal Aid Highway Act amended to provide incentives for highway and bridge construction project using materials produced from coal ash.
  • Duquesne Light takes advantage of the act by hiring GAI to use coal ash as an alternative construction material for its East Street Valley Expressway (I-279) project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Engineering companies grew to meet the building and structural demands of urbanization

Through the decades, laws were amended...

roads and bridges were built, rebuilt and expanded. GAI stayed in stride with this continued change:

  • 1992 GAI’s efforts in the Highway and Bridge Design, Facility Design, and Access Road Design near the Pittsburgh International Airport wins three awards.
  • 1994 GAI completes Phase I preliminary engineering study for PennDOT’s Erie Bayfront Connector project.
  • 1996 GAI helps advance 1965 Appalachian Development Act with its study to develop and evaluate alternative corridors to link the rich and diverse historical, cultural, recreational, scenic, and natural resources of the Middle New River Basin in West Virginia with a scenic parkway.
  • 1998 GAI establishes Jacksonville, FL office and sets goal to provide full-service engineering in the North Florida region, with an emphasis on construction engineering and inspection services.
  • 2004 GAI awarded four awards for its work on the Erie Bayfront Project.
